Table tennis balls:
If you were to describe a table tennis ball, you would probably start with its outer shape, as it looks round and hollow at first glance. A table tennis ball is made of celluloid. Since the year 2000, the diameter of the table tennis ball has been 40mm and it weighs approx. 2.7g. Before that, the diameter was 38mm and the table tennis ball weighed around 2.5g. The 2mm increase in diameter was intended to reduce the speed, making it more attractive for spectators to follow the table tennis ball. However, this plan was thwarted by the constant further development of rubbers and blades (compensated loss of speed).
Quality levels:
Table tennis balls can be divided into two different quality levels: Training balls and 3-star balls. The more stars a table tennis ball has, the better the quality. The 3-star balls are subject to a precise selection process in order to achieve the smallest deviations in hardness, roundness and surface. However, the quality is not only dependent on the number of stars, but also on the manufacturer. Both the "DTTB" logo and the "ITTF" mark are a sign of good quality.
Training balls vs. match balls:
One advantage of training balls over match balls is clearly the price. Training balls are much cheaper than 3-star balls. However, this is also clearly visible in the quality. Therefore, 3-star balls are mandatory for competitions. As the table tennis ball can reach speeds of up to 180 km/h and can deform by up to 20% on impact, normal training balls would be virtually unusable after a few of these hard hits. Competition balls are therefore much more stable.
