Playing characteristics of the badminton rackets

Top-heavy - Grip-heavy
In badminton, a distinction is made between top-heavy and grip-heavy rackets. A top-heavy badminton racket has slightly more weight in the racket head, so the center of gravity is closer to this area. Such rackets are more offensive and you have a lot of power in the smash. Due to the weight distribution, these badminton rackets tend to feel a little heavier. Grip-heavy rackets have a little more weight in the handle and therefore feel a little lighter. Due to the lower center of gravity, these rackets can be moved very quickly and are suitable for fast underhand strokes and a more technical to defensive style of play. Of course, there are also badminton rackets with characteristics that lie between top-heavy and grip-heavy - these are called "balanced".

Flexible or stiff
Most badminton rackets are categorized as flexible, midflex or stiff. This refers to the flexibility of the shaft. A flexible shaft bends more during the stroke and thus creates a slightly greater whipping effect. A stiff shaft plays more directly and therefore generates a lot of power, especially when smashing. It is always important to consider the combination with the hardness of the badminton racket string.

Weight of the badminton racket
Unless otherwise stated, the weight of the badminton racket always refers to the frame weight. The weight of the string should therefore be added. Grip tapes and overgrips (if any are wound) are also added. A normal badminton string weighs approx. 5 g. A normal badminton racket made of graphite (or other fibers - no metal) weighs approx. 90g. From approx. 85g you can already speak of a lighter racket. Frames weighing less than 80g then belong to the absolute lightweights among badminton rackets. As with the other playing characteristics of the badminton racket, the frame weight must also suit the type of player. Lightweight rackets are quick to move and often comfortable to play for players with shoulder problems. However, they also offer less swing mass and therefore usually do not play as aggressively. In addition, hitting the shuttlecock precisely is even more important.
